Approved by the FDA in 1997, Raxar was removed from the market after questions regarding its safety were raised in 1999. Raxar was shown to prolong the heart's QT interval. This prolongation may result in a ventricular arrhythmia known as torsades de pointes. Although rare, such a reaction to Raxar can be fatal. Since Raxar's approval, over 2.65 million prescriptions have been written.
Side Effects
- Difficulty Breathing
- Irregular or Slow Heartbeats (arrhythmia)
- Fainting or dizzy spells (torsade de pointes)
- Hives
- Swelling of lips, tongue or throat
- Seizures
- Confusion or Hallucinations
- Liver Damage
- Muscle or Joint Pain
- Ringing in Ears
- Increased skin sensitivity to sunlight
- Yellow eyes or skin
- Vomiting
- Elevated blood levels of the liver enzymes
- Liver failure
- Unusual tiredness
- Weakness
